Le opere di Marie Velardi offrono frequentemente una visione insolita del futuro, una visione che può deludere le nostre aspettative più ottimiste. La letteratura fantastica e fantascientifica del XXo secolo, quella di Aldous Huxley, George Orwell e Kurt Vonnegut, per non citare che gli esempi più celebri, già aveva abbandonato le visioni utopiche e i viaggi fantastici propri dell’illuminismo e del romanticismo per proporci distopie, siano esse il risultato di una dittatura totalitaria o di un capitalismo sfrenato e malsano. Ed ecco che la fantascienza diventava uno strumento per metterci in guardia contro i pericoli latenti della società contemporanea: perché le visioni distopiche altro non sono che l’esasperazione di situazioni politiche, sociali e ecologiche attuali e reali. Così, se Marie Velardi fa l’inventario delle isole che saranno sommerse nel 2107, analogamente riprende i modelli urbanistici in scala ridotta della città di Ginevra per svilupparne la storia e prevederne la completa scomparsa nel 20'006 in seguito all’epoca dei “Gas Neri”. Se crea una “Agenzia effimera di prospettive sperimentali” o ancora si reca nella Guyana francese con il regista Daniel Schweizer e il suo aiuto regista Frédéric Favre e realizza Wanta Wayana il quale interroga le prospettive di sviluppo e sopravvivenza del popolo Wayana, è per sensibilizzarci sui problemi che incombono sull’umanità e che dobbiamo affrontare oggi. A Monte Carasso, l’artista ci invita in un nuovo viaggio di finzione nel tempo.

The works of Marie Velardi frequently offer an unusual view of the future, a vision that might not respond to our most optimistic expectations. The fantasy and science-fiction literature of the 20th century, that of Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Kurt Vonnegut, to mention just a few of the most famous names, had already abandoned the utopian visions and fantastic voyages of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, imagining dystopias caused either by totalitarian regimes or unbridled, unchecked capitalism. Science fiction became a way of warning us about the latent dangers of contemporary society: because dystopian visions are simply exaggerations of real, present-day political, social and ecological situations. So while Marie Velardi makes an inventory of the islands that will be submerged in 2107, she also returns to small-scale urban models of the city of Geneva to outline its history and predict its complete disappearance in 20006, after an era of “Black Gases”. If she creates an “Ephemeral Agency of Experimental Perspectives”, or goes to French Guiana with the director Daniel Schweizer and his assistant Frédéric Favre to make Wanta Wayana, examining the prospects for development and survival of the Wayana people, it is to make us aware of the problems that threaten humanity and must be faced today. At Monte Carasso, the artist invites us to take a new voyage of fiction in time.
